Where do I start to tell of this tale,
a lovely young filly I saw at the sale,
standing alone there was no one she knew
and stamped on her rump was a big number 2.

As I stood and watched for a while
I thought to myself, this filly's got style
her eyes were bright her legs were long
her neck and back appeared to be strong.

Then, I thought how her temper would be
Moody! some fillies are know to be
is this a fact? or, is this a tale,
I hope thats not why she's here at this sale.

My hand as it rest up on the gate
the filly she did not hesitate
over to me she sniffed a hello,
and home with you I would love to go.

Take me home and love me dear
I'll give you my best with each passing year
as you can see, I am starting to bloom
I'll need lots of love, some feed, and a groom.

Fifty Dollars! the bidding began
At Ninety Dollars, I raised my hand
One Hundreds! was next bid in line
will she be his, or, will she be mine.

What price a Waler!
Has the Nation forgot?
Few left, but stout, and will never fail yer
Give their heart, that's all, for love and loyalty
Nothing, but nothing will compare to a Waler

Up shot his hand, the man bid again
should I bid now for one hundred and ten
Then I remembered the filly her gaze
I'll give you my best for the rest of my days.

One hundred dollars! do I hear any more!
One hundred dollars! for the very last call!
Then raising my hand at just the right time
Will she be his , or, will she be mine.

If it's meant to be yours, it will be
If not let the thought go free
Damn! one look at the insufficient wallet

One hundred and ten for the very last time
the fall of the hammer, the filly is mine.
First time bidding at a horse sale yard
not so easy but, not so hard
they say if it's yours, then it was meant to be
now this filly she belongs to me.

Take me home and love me dear
I'll give you my best with each passing year
as you can see I am starting to bloom
I'll need lots of LOVE, some feed and a groom.

A chance at life, and more is true,
The relationship she'll have with you.
Good times ahead for she - now saved,
A fit reward for all she braved.

And when they pass, as they must do,
A gap remains, for the friends we knew.
And even though our hearts do break,
We remember them, for old times sake.

"OLD HORSE O'MINE"
(author unknown)

Hoof-beats that rang on the crowded street,
Had never beat unto me
All the wealth of the gold in your old black hide,
All the grit of you loyalty;
But deep in the sand of a lonely land,
Out on many a far flung trail,
Your old hoofs spoke of a heart you broke
For me, that you might not fail.

Great eyes, that dusked in the green gums' wave,
Though I recked not that you were there,
That danced or dulled at the whim mayhap
Of a fancy unaware -
How the mateship grew in the depths of you,
When the waste spread its gauntness wide.
How you parched with me, how you marched with me,
Through that Hell of a thirst denied.

Brave Soul that sprung in the colt of you,
Unguessed in the years far back,
Ere your Fate ran out from a land of streams
To the drought of a sun-blazed track -
For the days since seen, for the pals we've been,
When Old Time sees us through -
O! If then there be for the likes o' me,
A Heav,n - it must hold you too.

My old mare Happy died last year, aged 36. She was called Happy because it rhymed with HB, her name when I aquired her. It stood for Hellbitch. She turned out the toughest, grandest, most loyal mare ever - and a top ride. No words I have could do her justice. She was a Waler, bred on Wilpena, S.A. Pulled off meat trucks many times - because she had a few good bucks in her. The owner before me got her as the meatworks trucks refused to carry her any more, and this person did some good with the mare. She came to me with the biggest, longest high-port hackamore I have ever seen! She was a bolter, bucker and finally, used as a broodmare. Then I bought her - told she was only good for a broodmare. I found the old 9th Lancer bit as used by the Light Horse, curb on the 7th link (loose), reins on the bottom slot worked - never tried once to pull or bolt. Did bolt in a snaffle though! Did love a pigroot for a bit every time you mounted - hey, why not, it was a bit of fun and after that - you had a real horse, capable of anything, braver than an army. We did a lot of riding. My daughter evented and did pony club with her. My 6yo niece won "Best behaved horse" at Westbury Gymkhana (crawled between her hind legs, sat under her, rode over a bridge etc). Just the best after cattle and running horses. The hardest hooves ever - she was never shod! Some rogue.
Says a lot that ornery little unloved, abused gal became such a loving and game best friend.

She was tougher than granite, had seen the hard times
But the tough little mare was a good friend of mine
Gamer than Ned and so proud of bearing
We did many miles, all her willingness sharing
Top mare after cattle and out on the trail
She even evented, there's many a tale
She could pigroot and bolt but never did wrong
Once you had her the bluff turned into sweet song
A rogue they said that always went bad
If that is a rogue, then I must be mad
Nicker to see you, always a mate
Always the first one up to the gate
The biggest heart beat in that strong little frame
Under the scars and burns marks
Some rogue humans had made
The grandest mare that trod the earth
No bank has the money that Happy was worth
All those who knew her called her a legend
She was loved and admired right to the end
Brown with black stockings, a big white star
There will be a horse heaven, where-ever you are
She was simply, one of the best
Now gone away for a well deserved rest
Rest in peace, darling Happy now you are home
Where all of the best are set free to roam
I'll be pleased to see you when I get up above
And say thank you my friend, for your undying love

Brilliant old mare! LOVE IT.

You saw in her eyes, no other could see
You gave her your love, which made her HAPPY!
She felt in your hands, a friend that is true
She only returned what was given from you.

Try this on for size

Of all the felt I ever felt
I never felt a piece of felt
which felt as fine as that felt felt
when first I felt that felt hat's felt
